Only the Los Angeles and the San Joaquin valley areas are worse than Chico in terms of particulate air pollution. We must protect our families from easily preventable harm.
>> 75 % of the particulate pollution in Chico during the winter months comes from household wood burning and backyard burn piles.
>> Last year Chico exceeded the safe limit for the PM 2.5 particulates 38 times. PM 2.5 particulates are the smallest and most damaging to health.
>> Exposure to PM 2.5 particulate pollution leads to between 14,000 and 24,000 premature deaths in California each year. To put this into perspective, this number is 4-6 times as manypeople killed in road accidents.
>> Particulate pollution in the levels seen in Chico are known to cause and aggravate cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, respiratory infections, asthma attacks, and other lung problems including abnormal lung development in children.
Tell our county to act appropriately. We can so easily reduce the damage. Quickly email Gail Williams at gwilliams@bcaqmd.org and tell her that we need a mandatory no burn policy on the most dangerous days and nights. All she needs is a few sentences from regular people to give to the governing board who make the decisions that affect us all. We're very close but need your input.
Incipient Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama’s selection of Joseph Biden as his running mate constitutes a stunning betrayal of the anti-war constituency who made possible his hard-fought victory in the Democratic primaries and caucuses.
The veteran Delaware senator has been one the leading congressional supporters of U.S. militarization of the Middle East and Eastern Europe, of strict economic sanctions against Cuba, and of Israeli occupation policies.
Most significantly, however, Biden, who chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the lead-up to the Iraq War during the latter half of 2002, was perhaps the single most important congressional backer of the Bush administration’s decision to invade that oil-rich country.
